How being busy can backfire

I know I know. We have been hearing all of these things lately that have been discussing the importance of making the most of our time, but what does that mean? I remember being so busy that I would wake up at 6 am and return home at 10 pm, shower, sleep, and wake back up and do it again. I was exhausted but I accomplished a lot. I received my masters, made friends, met my husband, traveled, All of which I would say are pretty good things. However, I lacked the ability to process things to take the time to be intentional and to understand that I was operating out of fear and the need to keep up with societal standards.

 Here are six ways having a busy day can backfire.

Keeping up with the Jones or not?

I encourage everyone to ask themselves what does the push factor come from? Many people will find that a lot of these accomplishments don’t really mean much to them. I get it, we have a family that we want to provide for. We have material things we want to accomplish, absolutely accomplish them, but you don’t have to be busy to be productive.

Lack of time to process things

When big things happen to us it takes time to process them and to go through the various stages. We often feel like we are behind if we don’t keep going and keep pushing. Take the time to process things that evoke an emotion inside of you.

Listening to self

When we take the time to meditate and pray we find that we can truly hear our inner voice. Oftentimes when we are busy we lack the awareness of self and distinguishing our voice versus others. Take the time to build a relationship with yourself and find out who you are, and what you like. Because whether we know it or not that changes as we grow and if we don’t continue to build that relationship we cannot hear our needs clearly.

Stillness = Increased anxiety

Whoop! Did we all in some capacity experience this during the pandemic? Anxiety just creeping in. All the stuff we packed inside came bursting out. The things we didn’t have the time to address. Yup, and it was tough to deal with? But the beauty of having stillness is time to process again, time to process those difficult things. We know that when we don’t address something it will keep knocking at our door, louder and louder until we answer it. And God has a funny way of forcing us to sit down and deal with things if we don’t take the time to do it ourselves.

Guilt around relaxing

I’ve seen how others (and myself) have guilt around the moments of stillness. Some are so goal-oriented and seeking that it almost feels unproductive to give yourself a break or not to have a tangible reward for relaxing. I encourage you to add relaxing as a productive method, place it on the goal list and see how it increases energy and creativity. I don’t know how many times when relaxing that an idea just came to my mind. When the mind and body are overly busy creativity lacks.

Partnered with God

Are you allowing space for God to do his part? Creating a busy life can oftentimes signify a (do it myself mentality) whether you know it or not God wants to do his part. If we are so busy doing everything for ourselves, where is there room for God? Remember you are in co-creation in this life. God wants to lead and assist us.

These are just a few reasons to create balance in your life. Remember being busy doesn’t equate being productive. Now go out, get in nature, spend time with friends, or do nothing!
